Florian Bergoin grew up in the village of St. Francois de Sales in the Savoie region of eastern France, specifically in the the Bauges Mountains (Massif des Bauges), a mountain range stretching from the city of Annecy to the city of Chambéry, which is part of the French Prealps. It is a beautiful and rugged region which is home to over 110 ski resorts.
Cheesemaking is a way of life for many people in this region and the Bauges region in particular is well known for its diverse and delicious cheese.
Florian has grown up learning the craft of cheesemaking, first from his grandfather's family as well as spending several summers while he attended university employed as a shepherd for one of the local farms. As a shepherd, his role was to take the herd of dairy cattle up into the mountains for the summer where they could graze, milking them on the mountain and making cheese daily from the milk.
He also worked on over ten dairy farms around the world including the local Fox Dairy as a relief milking hand.
After immigrating to Quebec with his partner Adeline Dupuis who is originally from Paris, France, he worked at Fromagerie le Ruban Bleu in Quebec, further developing his craft as a cheesemaker.
Florian has a Bachelors and a Masters degree in Agroforestry from the University Laval of Quebec City and has a particular interest in the melding of forestry and agriculture. He is also a Registerd Professional Biologist in the province of B.C.
Florian and Adeline settled in Quesnel in 2013 and purchased a small acreage in Kersley, BC close to Fox Dairy Farm where the Fromagerie is located.
Florian and Adeline have grown to love the community of Quesnel and have made it their home. The especially enjoy spending time in the beautiful nature that surrounds the area - camping, skiing, hiking and fishing. They look forward to meeting many more people as they take this next step into opening La Belle Valle Fromagerie and are excited about putting down roots here in the Cariboo.
